Communal Flying Squirrels = More Squirrel Poop

Another unique habit of the Southern Flying Squirrel is its habit of communal nesting, especially in the winter.  And one of the main issues of a large number of flying squirrels over-wintering in an attic is the resultant large amount of squirrel poop.

Do you see all those brown streaks on the siding coming down from the soffit?  As you might suspect, it is the result of a large amount of squirrel feces and urine.

Here’s Ryan describing the situation on video.

Unlike other species of squirrels, the Southern flying squirrel has no problems residing in communal nests through the winter.  Experts believe they do this for warmth and social benefits.

Right now, many of the squirrels have left the attic and only the core group remains.  But, at some point this winter, this particular attic was flying squirrel central in this vicinity.

When Ryan poked his head up to take a look he was actually able to see a flying squirrel.  Ryan knew that there were some flying squirrels that were still present, but seeing is believing.  Viewing the flying squirrels in the day is unsual; don’t expect the same.

In order to share this experience with you, Ryan shot some video of the encounter.  The squeaking noise is him trying to get the squirrels attention.  Notice how light they are.  As the flying squirrel hops around, it barely seems to make an indent into the blown insulation.

Flying Squirrel Removal and Repairs

In order to deal with this problem, we recommend:

  1. Removing the squirrels that are present
  2. Sealing up the house so squirrels can’t get back in
  3. Cleaning as needed

Removing the squirrels and sealing up the house go hand in hand.  The squirrels can’t be effectively removed unless all possible entries are sealed.  Since they are so small, sealing them out of a known winter gathering spot is a challenge.  Frontline Animal Removal is up for the challenge.
