Honeybee Removal from Soffit

Honeybees are great!  They pollinate all kinds of plants and give us delicious honey.

But, when a colony of honeybees takes up residence in a home, they should be removed.  Here’s an example.

Sometimes they end up living in void spaces in people’s homes.

This soffit, for example, was the recent residence of a honeybee colony.

Like a natural tree hollow, this colony found the protection and climate of this home’s soffit appealing and they moved right in.

After moving in, the colony got right to work building wax honeycomb and filling it with pollen and honey.  Busy as a bee is a well deserved adage as you can see in the following pictures.

Here, you can see how they’ve begun to fill the void in the soffit.

Clean Up after Honeybee Removal

Honeycomb in bucketAfter the bees are carefully removed and ready to be moved to their new home, clean-up is important before seal up.

All of the comb needs cleaned out of the cavity.  It is heavy, sticky, and has no place being left in a soffit, ceiling, or wall space. This would be bad for the structure.

Honey is prized by other bees, insects, and mammals.  Leaving any behind would serve as a huge invitation for more animals seeking this honey.  The object is to clean out the space well and not let any honeybees or any other animals back in.

Opening up structures to clean out  the comb is often where the expense in bee removal lies.  Most bee removers will accept the colony of bees as payment for removal.  But, there is a labor and materials fee charged for opening up structures, cleaning, and proper sealing.

As these pictures show, the comb gets securely attached to the structure.

Providing a New Living Arrangement

After removal, we believe the responsible thing to do is to give these honeybees a new home in another locale.

Please consider live removal rather than choosing a company that will just kill the honeybees.

We keep bees ourselves and have relationships with other beekeepers.  Sure this colony will need TLC with an eviction this close to winter.  But, a responsible beekeeper will feed them and give them a good home.
