Squirrels Chew Into Garage

Can squirrel chewing cause a lot of damage?

Can it cause a whole gutter to pull off a garage?

If you are not one to underestimate the damage potential of the grey squirrels’ incisors, you know the answer to these questions is a definite “Yes”.

Squirrels left to live in a structure for a prolonged period of time can definitely wreak havoc.  Today’s blog highlights one of these cases.

Read on and watch the included video to find out more.

Squirrels Chewing Through Fascia

Today’s highlighted squirrel problem is one where squirrels chewed their way into a garage at two spots.

Not only did the chewing allow the squirrels to come and go from the garage at will, but it increased gutter damage.

The gutter on the garage may have been sagging already giving the squirrels opportunity.  But even if that was the case, once the squirrels got done chewing the gutter is barely hanging on.

Take a look at the following video and we believe you’ll agree that these squirrels weren’t messing around.

Strategy for Squirrel Removal & Repair

The takeaways from this video are:

  • Squirrels are great chewers.  When they want in some place and only wood is in the way, it’s no contest.
  • Blocking squirrels is accomplished best with metal.  Ryan made a temporary covering for the hole at the end of the garage to force squirrels to use the big hole.  He used a piece of aluminum to do this. The screen that someone else tried had already been chewed through and was no match against squirrel teeth.
  • Two traps of squirrels are utilized in squirrel removal.  One type catches squirrels coming out.  The other type (the ones that caught squirrels in this case) catch squirrels that were outside when the entries were blocked.  These squirrels were looking to get in but were intercepted by well baited traps.  For more on the two types of squirrel traps we use see this post.
  • Repairs to the fascia and gutter are necessary to really call this squirrel problem “solved”.  Leaving these holes open is not an option.  Once the squirrels are removed, both areas will need repaired.  Whether they are covered or replaced is a decision the homeowner will need to make.  But, from experience, we can assure you that are not properly repaired are sure to invite more squirrels back.
