What is the Best Mole Trap?

When people ask us what’s the best mole trap, we jokingly tell them any trap that catches a mole.

And to some extent that is true.

There are many different types of mole traps on the market and in the right hands they all have the ability to trap a mole.  Especially, when set on tunnels that moles are actively using.

In today’s post, we share what we feel are two of the best mole traps out there

  1. The Victor Out O’Sight Mole Trap
  2. The Trapline Mole Trap

We like these traps because they are well made and have proven themselves to be very effective.

Before we go on, please know that we are not paid endorsers of these two products.  We buy our traps like anyone else.

But, since we often get asked what we use to catch moles, we figure it is a worthwhile blog post topic.

The Victor Out O’Sight Mole Trap

Stark County Mole Trappers

The Out O’Sight (OOS) Mole Trap is made by Victor, a company long known for its mousetraps and other pest control products.

The OOS is a scissor style trap designed to straddle a mole’s tunnel.  When the mole goes through the tunnel it finds an obstruction of dirt which the trigger is resting on.  The mole moves the dirt and moves the trigger.

The powerful spring in the middle of the trap brings two sets of jaws together in a scissor like motion.  The spring is tough: tough enough that setting tools come with the trap to help get it set.  The jaws catch the mole around the midsection.

These traps sit low to the ground, just above tunnel depth.  This makes them a good choice for a variety of tunnel depths.

As you can see we paint the tops for visibility or tie a piece of ribbon on it.  This helps mowers and feet avoid the traps.  They can also be covered with a small bucket.

Here is a short video of a Victor Out O’Sight in action.  And check out their web site here.

Trapline Mole Trap

Ohio mole trappingThe other mole trap we highly recommend is the Trapline Mole Trap developed by Steve Albano.

It is a well built stainless steel trap that also is spring operated.  But, unlike the OOS which straddles the mole run, this trap is about the diameter of a mole tunnel and slips into the tunnel.

The mole crawls along the tunnel, between the jaws, and hits the trigger with its nose or front paws.  This fires the trap and captures the mole.

The traps are used in tandem; one faces one way down the mole tunnel and a second trap faces the other way.  This way, no matter which way the mole is travelling, it is captured.

An advantage of these traps is that when they are used they are completely below ground.  The untrained eye never even knows they are there unless their location is marked by a flag.  This is useful in many situations.

When people call on us to get rid of the moles in their yards, you can bet we want to use traps that help us do it efficiently.

The two traps we routinely use are the Trapline Mole Trap and the Victor Out O’Sight.  We have tested them thoroughly and give them high recommendations.  That’s our two cents.

Give them a try or….. hire us (or a professional mole trapper in your area) and we’ll do the trapping for you.
