Squirrel Noises Alert Homeowners of Squirrel Problem
This is a very common time of year for homeowners to discover they have a family of squirrels living in an attic, soffit, or walls. Why is that?
Often times, homeowners don’t realize they have a squirrel problem until they begin to hear young squirrels.
A lone female squirrel is usually pretty stealthy. She may have a nest entrance somewhere into a home and the homeowners don’t even realize she’s there. Out of sight (and hearing) …out of mind.
But then the noises start. Once the baby squirrels get old enough to start making noise and move around a lot they usually blow the mother squirrel’s cover. Then the homeowners realize a family of squirrels has moved in.

Squirrels Are Born Twice A Year
For some great information about Ohio’s gray squirrels, we recommend the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s publication “Life History Notes / Gray Squirrel”.
We refer to this publication in pointing out some facts on Ohio’s squirrels:
- Breeding takes place twice a year (December/January and May/June)
- Birth takes place twice a year (February/March and July/August)
- Newly born squirrels don’t open their eyes for the first 36 days (5 weeks)
- It takes 7 weeks until they sample solid food
- It take 10 weeks before they venture out of the nest
Knowing this, it makes perfect sense that people are now hearing noises indicative of young squirrels: scratching, scurrying, little barks, and running. Many squirrels are entering that 7-10 week period from their births right now.
